Unsolicited Advice for Authors, Agents, and Editors
Don’t return a call when you know the person won’t be there to answer it.
Editors and agents check email after hours and on weekends, but we don’t want to find anything there.
If an editor brings an author or project idea to an agent, that editor gets an exclusive for a time to be determined.
Do not refer to your agent as “lady,” “chick,” “baby,” etc.
”Whatever” is not an appropriate response to an editor’s comment/question in a manuscript.
It’s okay to query multiple agencies, but not in the same email.
Editors and agents should be cc’d on everything.
A rejection is better than no response at all.
In acknowledgments, always thank your publishing team, especially your editor, even if you don’t mean it.
Editors should respond in a timely manner even if, and especially if, they are passing.
